The fleet of more than 400 yachts leaving the start line off Cowes was an impressive sight this morning. With each class starting in 10 minute intervals, the light 5-8 knot sou'wester and flat water was a dramatic change of scene from the last two Fastnet Races that set off in boat-breaking conditions.
As each of the various classes reached the Hurst Narrows the wind compressed and - in combination with a 3 knot outgoing current and flat water - set the fleet well on their way.
For the smaller boats in the Admiral's Cup fleet the first critical waypoint was to pass the Portland Bill tidal gate this evening before the tide turned.
At 10.30pm English time, the the MoD 70 Argo has passed the Lizard with 16 knots of boatspeed, while the bulk of the Admiral's Cup AC 1 fleet are passing Start Point. The majority of the AC 2 fleet is some 25-30nm behind.
